In this eight-part series, Deeply Rooted will explore environmental justice in a changing Washington. By focusing on the communities and individuals who fight for justice in the outdoors past and present — think food sovereignty or water rights or undocumented agricultural workers battling against harmful pesticide exposure — we’ll help viewers understand how those issues came about, and how they can be fixed.

Our nation's parks and forests have struggled with a diversity problem for decades now. A long history of racism and exclusion in the great outdoors has left a deeply ingrained message about natural spaces: People of color don’t belong. Today, a group of dedicated nature lovers in Wenatchee hopes to change that.
